Yumepirika

By Nathan Myhrvold
Limited Edition

This close-up photograph showcases Yumepirika, a premium A-rank rice variety cultivated in Hokkaido’s Toyohashi paddy fields. Known for its exceptional quality, Yumepirika is the result of advanced breeding technologies applied to Hokkaido-grown rice. Nathan was inspired to create this image after a visit, years ago, to a high-end Tokyo department store where customers used microscopes to inspect rice quality. He wanted to re-create that experience to highlight the details of this treasured Japanese ingredient, which from this perspective, looks like cracked fragments of quartz or white marble. This image is part of the Intention and Detail exhibition, which explores the beauty of traditional Japanese cuisine through a zoomed-in lens.
