Star Trails over Dead Horse Point

By Nathan Myhrvold
Limited Edition

Dead Horse Point is a state park within Canyonlands National Park in Utah. Nathan took a 4WD dirt road to about 1,000 feet below the top of Dead Horse Point, where he set up a tripod to capture a panorama of star trails. To get this range of the night sky, he designed and used a custom bracket that positions three cameras in such a way that, after stitching, they form a panorama with a 3:1 aspect ratio. Affectionately dubbed The Three Amigos, Nathan aimed his cameras due North, aligning the sheer canyon walls in silhouette as the starry sky spun overhead through the night.
