Riding the Wind
Sandhill cranes are magnificent birds. Despite their large size, they have figured out a way to fly long distances, which can be hundreds of miles a day, at speeds of about 25 to 35 mph. They rely heavily on thermals and tailwinds. Thermals, which are warm rising air currents, help the cranes gain height, while tailwinds help carry them through the air like a hang glider.
