Kizami Nori 1

By Nathan Myhrvold
Limited Edition

Nori, a dried edible seaweed, is known as kizami nori when shredded in Japan. With the naked eye, nori is dark green, nearly black, but under the microscope you can see prisms of color—pinks, yellows, purples, and reds—not evident without the aid of technology. What seems simple at first glance is often more complex and beautiful than we initially realize. This image is part of the Intention and Detail exhibition, which showcases the beauty of traditional Japanese cuisine through a zoomed-in lens.
