“Snowflakes are a great example of hidden beauty. Water, which is an incredibly familiar thing to all of us, is quite unfamiliar when you see it in this different view. The intricate beauty of snowflakes is derived from their crystal structure, which is a direct reflection of the microscopic aspects of the water molecule.” —Nathan Myhrvold
With a subject as delicate as snowflakes, time and temperature are extremely important in capturing an intact subject. With this in mind, Nathan developed an innovative technique for photographing the crystal structure of snowflakes with great clarity and detail. The technique involves using pulsing LED lights (which is not a standard operation) to reduce the heat they put out and increase the speed at which he can capture the image. Along with this method, he works with a snowflake camera that he custom built; it’s the highest-resolution snowflake camera in the world. This snowflake is of the stellar dendrite variety, which means it’s multi-branched appearance appears “tree-like”.
