Female Cheetah
Photographed on safari in Zimbabwe, a female cheetah, poised and alert, surveys her surroundings, waiting for the opportune moment to hunt. Her sleek, muscular form and focused expression embody the speed and agility that make her one of the most impressive hunters in the animal kingdom. Cheetahs are the world’s fastest land animal, able to reach speeds over 70 mph in just over three seconds. With a long, lanky frame and flexible spine, cheetahs have an incredible grace, which makes them a spectacular subject to photograph. Unlike other big cats, cheetahs hunt during the day. They’re visual hunters that stalk prey in big, open plains. This allows them to see what they’re doing and take advantage of their superior speed. They’re also unique because males form lifelong coalitions, often with their brothers, to help protect against predators and bolster their hunting success. Female cheetahs are solitary, preferring to raise their cubs alone.
