As early as the 1730s, a few scientists had reported seeing lightning that shot weirdly upwards from storm clouds toward the stars above. It wasn’t until 1989 that these odd discharges were caught on film—and that was an accident. Elusive and other worldly, they came to be known as sprites, after the air spirits of legend. It took a lot of patience and trial and error, but Nathan at last caught an amazing display in 2021 near Glendo, Wyoming. By taking several exposures that he later combined, he was able to capture a half-dozen or more sprites playing against the stars in this panoramic image. As an additional bonus, that night rippling bands of high clouds picked up the ambient greenish skyglow, adding another ethereal element to the scene.
