OVERVIEW
Red sprites are a little-known but spectacular form of lightning that was only occur high in the atmosphere miles above active thunderstorms and weren’t discovered by scientists until 1989. From his vantage point above Lake DeSmet, Wyoming, Nathan was able to safely watch and photograph the storm from about 100 miles away. The storm, to the right of the picture, was lit only by its own lightning, but since it was so far away, the intervening air reddened the flashes of light. To the left, rosy fingers of dawn creep over the horizon, while the Milky Way stretches above.
